Oil and Gas
Oil and gas are naturally occurring substances which are commonly used as fuel. The majority of our oil and gas supplies are acquired through off shore drilling. Oil rigs are erected in locations where there are deposits of oil and gas are present. Pockets of oil and gas are drilled into and the substances are extracted and processed so that they may be used as fuel. This processing can also take place on some off shore rigs, where oil and gas can be prepared for use as fuel and then shipped to the mainland.
Working on off shore rigs for the extraction of oil and gas is a high risk occupation. As a result it is fairly well paying and most crew members operate on a two weeks on, two weeks off basis. A rig that extracts oil and gas will typically employ two full crews who are onboard at any given time. Because extracting oil and gas is a twenty four hour process there needs to be a day and night time crew aboard the rig at all times.
The oil and gas industry is extremely important due to our reliance on use of these substances as fuels. However there is no uncertainty about the fact that oil and gas as well as other fossil fuels are in increasingly short supply. Over consumption of oil and gas is a serious problem, and other sources of fuel need to be found.
